R2D2, the first celebrity to arrive at the 2013 Saturn Awards
A PERSONAL OVERVIEW PART 1

by Alicia Hollinger

Burbank, CA (Pop Culture Today) 6/27/2013 -- You know you are entering the land of Geekdom when the first arrival on the red carpet is R2D2. And so began the 2013 Saturn Awards, the awards for science fiction, fantasy and horror. Unlike other award shows full of tension and nerves, this was a more relaxed affair comprised of self-proclaimed and proud-of-it geeks.  Although when Shane Black, director and writer of Iron Man 3, and infamous for his huge parties filled with beautiful and trendy people made a comment to me at the after-party that alluded to him feeling out of his element, I tried to explain to him "This is basically the geeks from Comic-Con after they become really successful." And what's wonderful is that they all remember the kid they used to be who lived for comic books or Star Trek and now they are writing/producing/directing/acting or working on projects they would have geeked out over as a child.

Celebrities trickled in, starting with Tyler Posie (Teen Wolf) who was so humble, he just walked down the red carpet like a kid excited to go to the awards as a guest until someone told him he's a celebrity and is supposed to stop for photographers and interviews. Next came the Continuum talent, Lexa Doig and Erik Knudsen. It was just last week that I discovered Continuum, a Canadian sci-fi highly political time travel show that I got so involved with, I watched the whole first season on Netflix in a marathon. Lexa Doig is almost synonymous with Canadian Sci-fi and played a small role on Stargate SG-1 aside husband Michael Shanks. According to her imdb bio, she is also a geek. "I'm a really big geek. I do dorky things, I snort when I laugh, I'm clumsy, I'm a sucker for RPG games on my computer, she says.

Eric Knudsen who plays the a Zuckerberg-esque super geek on brain steroids followed on the red carpet. Strangely, when they showed a clip from Continuum during the awards ceremony, they presented a compilation of action and fight scenes that looked more like some AFM C-movie action flick than the high quality, well-written show that it is...

Just found this. This is so cool. I love the part about them being geeks as kids and growing up to make a living at what they love. I'm still in college, but it gives me hope that one day I could be at their level!
