It's a pop culture trifecta on 4/20 2013 as Star Trek meets comic books meets umm-- 420, if you know what I mean--in a live-action unscripted stage play to be performed at the iO West Comedy Theater in Hollywood on Saturday April 20th at 11:30PM. The mastermind behind the show is creator Patrick Ian Moore, who plays the brash, young Jean Luc Picard before he was captain. He promises a "nerdtastically good time filled with fantasy, adventure, costumes & comedy…"
"Basically it's a fun group of geeky comedians dressing up like superheroes and putting on a play that's never been written, while a theater full of comic book nerds drink alcohol and support us. What the cast is doing onstage is the same thing we did as kids... Put on a costume and run around with your friends adlibing an adventure together," says Moore.
In a time when Comic-Con is way cool and Cannes is passe and old hat, Comic Book Live seems to be just the ticket in this new geekcentric culture. It can't be far off for "Star Trek, the Musical," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Ice" or "Stargate-Land" amusement park…
Moore says, "Today we've become a very tech-centric culture, and that makes being a nerd or geek more respectable. This brave new world of the 21st century is being designed by people who love comics, video games, science fiction, and fantasy. It's great!"
The origin of the code word"420" is still up to debate, the most popular being the story of kids in 1971 searching out hidden cannabis crops and designating the Louis Pasteur statue on the grounds of San Rafael High School as their meeting place, and 4:20 p.m. as their meeting time, according to Wikipedia. Now it has become a HIGHLY celebrated national pop culture holiday.
Finally, says Moore, "Comic Book Live has been performing together for over a year now, but this is our first 420 show. We're very 420-friendly and some of us have the munchies often. I very much enjoy watching STAR TREK when I have the munchies... And eating chocolate covered pretzels."
The cast includes Justine Joli as Dr. Beverly Crusher, hosted by celebrity nerd Attack of the Show's Chris Gore who also plays Kahn, with special guests Sealab 2021's Brett Butler and Mika Tan.
Admission is $5.00, no-host full bar with $5.00 drink specials and tickets are two for one--if you come in costume or what the Geekworld refers to as Cosplay. Gifts & prizes like free comic books will be provided by Hippy Comix. Hmm… Maybe soon there will be a Timothy Leary comic book. I'd like to see THAT!
