The VRLA Expo is bigger than ever this year, a two day event filled with panels, speakers, education and of course, the best part, the demos!

Here is some of the advance news I have so far... More coming soon, as well as photos, videos and interviews from VRLA Summer 16!

3D Live- Light Reimagined from 3D Live on Vimeo.

A REAL TIME VR RAVE BY 3D LIVE

3D Live (3DL), a leader in stereoscopic 3D LED technology, aim to turn imagination into reality. After debuting their new 4D amusement park experience "Mass Effect: New Earth", at California's Great America amusement park, 3DL will be showcasing a new type of Mixed Reality experience that combines a real-time interactive VR DJ application and large audience participation with and without Head Mounted Displays (HMDs). Through a deep collaboration with VRLA, The Wave, SubPac, and SkullCandy they have created an experience that will allow VRLA guests to directly participate in an immersive “holographic” universe of color, dimension, motion, and sound.

This real-time VR Rave will feature live performances by various DJs each day of VRLA. Guests can take part in the VR Rave virtually through The Wave’s VR app and Samsung Gear HMDs. Audience members who choose to watch the DJ perform in person can take part in the immersive VR world in a live 3D LED powered Mixed Reality experience that doesn’t require a VR headset.

"Normally VR is a very singular experience where you’re closed off from the world around you. The wonderment of VR is something we all desire to share in collectively. HMD’s prevent us from normal human interaction we are used to experiencing in a theater or concert, like eye contact or the natural energy a live audience creates.” explains Nathan Huber, CEO and Founder of 3D Live.
“What we’re doing with this project is breaking that “boundary” by providing a system that allows large audiences to be involved in a VR experience without wearing a VR headset. By introducing 3D LED we are transforming a normally closed off experience into a show in which onlookers can participate in the virtual world the VR player is actively involved in.” says Ryan Pardeiro, 3D Live’s COO and Founder.
Huber continues, "The performer or participants directly interact with the VR experience while still talking, walking, and interacting with their friends. This MR (Mixed Reality) experience we feel, has a future in E- Sports, Theme Parks, and many other markets.”
The gaming world was a natural fit for 3D Live's new form of mixed reality where digital visuals can be blended with VR players, live actors, and other physical elements without the need for a headset. 3D Live's technology is now making direct immersion in an MR gaming-based environment a reality.
3D Live is also showcasing their newest 4D/VR experience “CRY OUT: The Lonely Whale Experience”. This underwater 4D/VR expedition has been touring the world over the past year. It has been featured at Art Basal, The United Nations Paris Climate Summit, Singapore’s Broadcast Asia, Germany’s FMX, CES, NAB, IAAPA, SIGGRAPH, SXSW, Sundance Film Festival and many more.
With this cutting edge 4D/VR experience, 3D Live was the first to create a four-person multi-sensory motion based VR adventure utilizing HTC Vive. Capitalizing on the power of Epic’s Unreal4, 3D Live created this underwater 4D/VR expedition, in collaboration with Dell Precision, Alienware, AMD, MediaMation, and HTC technology. The immersive experience transports viewers into the depths of the sea to witness underwater life and see how pollution has disrupted it. The collaboration seeks to educate audiences about ocean conservation and the work of Adrian Grenier’s Lonely Whale Foundation.

JAUNT VR LAUNCHES A CURATED YOUTUBE TYPE PLATFORM

JAUNT FURTHER EXPANDS ITS CINEMATIC VR ECOSYSTEM WITH THE LAUNCH OF JAUNT PUBLISHING
VR Content, Created on Any Platform, to be Published in the Jaunt VR App
Jaunt Inc., an industry leader in cinematic virtual reality (VR), today announced the launch of Jaunt Publishing, a program that allows the growing community of professional VR creators to publish their high quality VR content directly to the Jaunt VR app.

Through an online portal on the company’s website, Jaunt Publishing enables creators to submit their work for consideration and publishing across the Jaunt platform. Once content is approved by an internal review board, creators will have access to Jaunt Cloud Services (JCS), its robust cloud-based VR production software suite, and the publishing tools within including transcoding, “deep-links,” support for premium spatial audio formats like Dolby Atmos, and processing and preparation for distribution on all VR platforms.
Jaunt Publishing is aimed at solving a common and sometimes paralyzing challenge for creators in the nascent VR industry: multichannel distribution. Jaunt is the only distribution hub that is truly platform agnostic, capable of seamlessly delivering cinematic VR content to every VR platform and device.
“Working with Jaunt was simple and intuitive; I didn't have to touch anything. I’m a very hands-on person, so it was a bit awkward at first, but when I started seeing the results it was clear that the encoding was solid,” said Quba Michalski, director of The Pull, one of 16 independently-produced pieces released on Jaunt so far. “And the finished piece plays on every device--it's as simple as that."
“Jaunt has a great team of business leaders who recognize a good product, which is so key in these early, crucial days of VR,” said Maureen Fan, executive producer of Invasion!, an independently- produced piece that's consistently a top video on Jaunt. “They’re great at featuring those products and getting your stories directly to your audience. In the case of our Invasion! movie short, Jaunt’s support has meant that many more people have gotten to experience what storytelling and VR looks and feels like, and how emotions come right to the surface in a very heartfelt way.”
Arthur van Hoff, co-founder and CTO for Jaunt, added, “It’s great to be able to provide a creative outlet for content creation in VR. We’re excited to be able to work with more of the VR creative community to showcase the high quality VR experiences they’re making.”
Key benefits and features of Jaunt Publishing include:
  • ●  Transcode in the Cloud: No need to encode each file format manually, as many creators currently do. Once a source file is uploaded to JCS, it’s automatically transcoded in the cloud for every device and platform.
  • ●  Compatible With Every Device: Jaunt is platform agnostic and supports the widest array of VR headsets and platforms available. Today, Jaunt supports iOS, Android, Gear VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR and desktop 360.

  • ●  One-Click User Access with “Deep Links”: Every video on Jaunt has a unique deep link--a single smart URL that brings viewers directly to a creator’s VR experience on the device they’re using. This eliminates any friction between someone learning about a creative’s content and experiencing it.
  • ●  Industry Recognition: Jaunt doesn’t accept every submission received, so when content is curated and featured within our app, viewers know the content deserves to be featured among the best cinematic VR experiences.
  • ●  Spatial Audio Technology: When it comes to immersive VR content, sound quality is more than half of the experience. The entire Jaunt platform supports the industry-leading Dolby Atmos technology that allows creators to incorporate precise spatial audio into the content they create.
Recently, Jaunt announced that its award-winning Jaunt ONE camera is available for rent via Radiant Images, an initial step in connecting the professional VR community to the company’s end-to-end solution. For those creators interested in shooting with the Jaunt ONE, the company will be showcasing the camera with Radiant Images at VRLA this week at booth A19/20. Jaunt will also be demonstrating the Jaunt Publishing platform, and the latest Dolby Atmos enabled content, alongside Dolby at booth C5.
For full guidelines on submitting through Jaunt Publishing, and information on ways to utilize Jaunt’s end-to-end solution throughout the creative process, visit: www.jauntvr.com/creators/submissions/guidelines/

ENVELOP VR INTRODUCES ENVELOP™ FOR WINDOWS® AN IMMERSIVE COMPUTING PLATFORM THAT ENABLES ALL OF YOUR WINDOWS APPLICATIONS WHILE IN VIRTUAL REALITY

Picture
Envelop for Windows Public Beta launches this Friday, August 5th at VRLA and will be available for download on Steam

Envelop VR, a software company that enables new ways to use virtual reality as a platform to work, create and play, introduces their initial product, Envelop™ for Windows®, the a fully immersive computing platform that enables all of your Windows applications while in a VR headset.

No longer limited by a physical “flat” monitor set-up, Envelop for Windows allows you to experience immersive computing by running any existing Windows application in a virtual environment. It provides users individual control over each window's size and location in a vast three-dimensional space. Users can open multiple windows, adjust them to any size, and place them wherever they want, improving multi-tasking capabilities and allowing for customization of a personal work space for improved productivity and efficiency while computing. Virtual reality users can now shop online, check social media, work in Microsoft Office and watch a YouTube video all at the same time.

Envelop for Windows is currently compatible with the HTC VIVE® and Oculus Rift VR headsets. The beta software, which has been in closed testing for the past several months, will be available to the public starting this Friday, August 5th on Steam for free, as part of Envelop VR’s presence at VRLA’s Summer expo. To download the software, go to www.envelopvr.com/download.

This all sounds great, but, ummm, I'm a Mac user. Apple, when are you going to get into VR???

The Only Platform for Extending Legacy Applications into VR

Envelop for Windows is the basis for a powerful, soon-to-be-released SDK (software development kit) that will enable developers to extend legacy two-dimensional applications and web sites, as well as new three-dimensional games and applications into the immersive computing platform. This means Envelop software will help produce a much greater virtual reality ecosystem. Virtual reality users wanting access to more intriguing content will want to make sure to download and use Envelop, and developers wanting a toolkit that will simplify creating new VR content or enable them to easily “VR-ify” legacy content, will also need access to the software.

“We believe that we are enabling the next wave of computing here at Envelop VR,” said Bob Berry CEO and co-founder. “No other virtual reality software company is actively pursuing such a broad view of what is necessary to bring immersive computing to the masses.”

Envelop for Windows is a proprietary engine built for maximum performance and flexibility. In addition to its multiple monitor functionality, and ability to give users individual control of the size and placement of each Windows application, it also allows for a mixed reality view (with the use of a web cam) so users are able to view their hands, keyboard and mouse while in a VR headset. This is an important feature for those individuals who are not touch typists.

The software also comes with several custom designed environments allowing users to change the backdrop scene and personalize the virtual space depending on their mood.

For maximum performance, Envelop requires a Windows 10 operating system and a VR-ready graphics processing unit, i.e. Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon™ R9 290 equivalent or better.

“I look upon Envelop for Windows as the ‘SuperGlue’ of VR and an essential step in exploiting what virtual reality can bring to current users of the Windows platform,” said Dr. Tom Furness, grandfather and pioneer of AR/VR.  “If you are going to make a significant investment in a VR headset like the Oculus Rift or HTC VIVE, Envelop will help you get the most out of your technology. You not only have better access to content, but you can use your computer while gaming and doing other tasks… and all this while you are immersed in three dimensional VR….it is magic.”

Damn, does this mean I'm going to have to get a Windows machine and Android phone so I can use the Gear? Seriously, Apple, what's up?
