SIGGRAPH 2015 - VIRTUAL REALITY STEALS THE SHOW

Los Angeles, CA (Pop Culture Today)

As an attendee at Siggraph for many years now, I've noticed it shrinking in size a bit every year, but tor what it lacked in floor space this year, it made up for with fun. Virtual Reality, or VR for short, stole the show as people lined up to check out goggles and content at various booths and at the new dedicated area - the VR Village.

For me, Vicon stole the show with its immersive VR technology. You have a backpack, a band around your feet and hands, VR goggles and you're holding a stick. All of a sudden you are not on a convention floor in LA, but in an Egyptian tomb and the stick in your hand is a lit torch and you look at your hands and legs and they are male although you are a female. And you look at the guy experiencing this with you and he is a female 3D avatar. The box he was holding is now a treasure chest. You are completely transported to another world. Time travel, wormhole travel, a sci-fi lover's dream. Thoughts of a future enter my mind where the atmosphere is unbreathable and people are trapped indoors in a bleak decrepit environment but get to escape their horrid lives and experience their fantasies with something better than drugs --VR. We are now entering the Twilight Zone, stepping onto the Holodeck. The future has arrived.

PictureGoogle Cardboard
Unfortunately, Vicon's virtual trip through the Stargate has not reached consumers yet, but Google's VR Cardboard has. Cadboard is a small viewer made of actual cardboard that you fold together like origami, attach the special lenses, slip in your smart phone, and voila--instant VR. Google cardboard uses "Side by Side" video technology, which is, exactly what it sounds like, two videos running side by side, and with the correct lenses, your eyes perceive the content as immersive 3D. Unfortunately Cardboard is not IOS native and was developed for Android so the magnets on the side that are used to go forward or perform other actions cannot work on Apple devices but most other app developers use a system where you just have to stare at an icon to trigger an action.

Various other companies are now selling plastic versions of the goggles with headbands so you don't have to hold the viewer like the Cardboard, but there are still many drawbacks. The phone itself, especially the bigger ones like iPhone 6+ are heavy and pull down on the unit causing pain or discomfort on your nose. And you have to keep opening and closing the unit to put the phone in, press buttons, etc... Some VR headsets are more immersive than others. Some just feel like you're watching a TV in the air, while others make you feel like you are actually there, completely immersed in the scene. I experimented downloading several VR apps (and more are popping up every day!) and found that those created for the Oculus Rift, the high end king of VR headsets, seem to work perfectly with the Cardboard, or at least the freebie knock-off I received at the Archiac booth at Siggraph.

Between Samsung who has the high end Gear goggles for Android only and Google who leaves IOS users behind without a usable control on the cardboard, one wonders, where is Apple? During a quick Google search, I find a lot of speculation about a secret patent for VR glasses to rival Oculus Rift and TechCrunch site says this: "Apple has been awarded a patent by the USPTO (via AppleInsider) for a head-mounted virtual reality set that uses an iPhone as the display and computing component. The patent describes something similar to both Google Cardboard and Samsung’s Gear VR, but with an insert built specifically to accommodate an iPhone, and with an optional remote that could be used to control the VR experience without having to deal with headset- or phone-based inputs." http://techcrunch.com/2015/02/17/apple-patents-a-vr-headset-for-iphone So there is hope for Apple users--as there always is.... But I want the Vicon version. Now.

A RANCH DAY RETREAT COMES TO PACIFIC PALISADES, CA

Chuck Wolf, author of the upcoming book "A Ranch Day Retreat: Life Improving, Productivity Enhancing, and Leadership Enabling Concepts Guided by the Model of Horses in Nature" (available this summer on Amazon,) is bringing a unique personal and leadership development workshop to Los Angeles-- with the help of some equine assistants...

If you ever wanted to spend a day on a horse ranch, without all the work, interacting with horses, but not riding, with no fear falling off and breaking your neck, a Ranch Day Retreat in Pacific Palisades could be for you.The event promises a fun day to take time out for yourself, away from the stress of the city, and commune with nature while participating in stimulating activities and exercises that will leave you feeling connected, refreshed and rejuvenated. And, according to Wolf, we will learn just what it is that horses have to teach us about ourselves. Which is probably a lot more than we will learn from the latest fashion week party...

The first date for this workshop is scheduled for this coming Wednesday, May 27th from 10am to 5pm at Will Rogers State Historic Park, sponsored by Westside Riding School, located at 1501 Will Rogers State Park Rd. Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

The facilitator, Wolf, says “We will cover some interesting topics from the book, which focuses on equine facilitated personal and leadership development. Some of the most interesting concepts are alignment, congruence, coherence, synchrony and entrainment, as they relate to the horse-human bond. We will have some fun and interesting exercises with horses, all geared toward the non-rider. It’s a workshop format with plenty of time for personal reflection and relaxation in nature. The important thing to convey is that it’s not for horse-people, but for anyone interested in personal development, with a unique twist and inspirational setting. Some take-aways are productivity tools, leadership effectiveness tools, creative problem solving tools, goal setting techniques, communication skills, and work ethic. Participants can take tangible tools back to their organizations and families. The goal is to take time out to gain direction, to re-energize, so that we can go back into our lives and persevere, and to be active players."

"It’s a day to get away from the office, email, cell phone, traffic and urban density. Busy executives to home makers and students will benefit by the concepts covered in A Ranch Day Retreat. Which makes a great gift or incentive, by the way.”

Chuck Wolf, a Los Angeles resident from the Southbay and Pacific Palisades, is a public speaker, and certified instructor for the international course, "Success: Full Living." He is the author of "A Ranch Day Retreat," and is also a fine art dealer and curator for the Los Angeles Animal History Museum. His interests include ocean conservation, marine wildlife protection, and animal rescue. He is a recreational rider, and holds a BA in Psychology from Indiana University.

There are still a few spots left for this inaugural event. To book your spot, contact:

Burbank, CA (Pop CultureToday) – 6/24/13 -- Richard Matheson, a prolific science fiction writer best known for the original "I Am Legend," the novel that inspired "The Incredible Shrinking Man," "Somewhere in Time," and classic episodes of the "Twilight Zone," died suddenly Sunday at the age of 87, just days before he was to be honored at this year's Saturn Awards.

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films had planned to award Matheson the Visionary Award at this year's ceremony on Wednesday. Instead it will be presented posthumously and the 39th Annual Saturn Awards will be dedicated to his memory.

“We are heartbroken to lose a writer of towering talent, unlimited imagination and unparalleled inspiration,” said Academy President Robert Holguin.  “Richard was a genius whose visions helped bring legitimacy and critical acclaim to science fiction and fantasy. He was also a longtime supporter of the Academy, and everyone associated with The Saturn Awards feels emptier today to learn of this enormous loss.  Richard’s accomplishments will live on forever in the imaginations of everyone who read or saw his inspired and inimitable work.”

Hollywood, CA (Pop Culture Today) 6/18/2013 -- It was an affair to remember at the Rockstar Mansion in the Hollywood Hills for two days and nights pre-E3, as Swedish luminaries and creatives mingled with Los Angelenos and E3 related talents and execs.

The infamous Rockstar Mansion boasts an incredible view that brings to mind the Bob Seger song Hollywood Nights-- "In those Hollywood hills, all those big city nights, in those high rolling hills, above all the lights" and the Swedish Affair brought a little much-needed glamor and glitz to those who attended as a pre-E3 event.
Picture
Swedish Affair - Guests listen to speakers by pool at daytime, then party hard at night!
During the day there were speeches and a casual chic feel while the night brought the pretty party people ready to imbibe and have fun.

Swedish celebrities and notables included actor Dolph Lundgren, Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari, Isabel Adrian, Swedish Housewife (the Swedish version of Housewives of Beverly Hills, New Jersey, etc...), wife of Steve Angelo of Swedish House Mafia, (a Swedish electronic dance music trio,) Ewa Björling, Swedish Minister for Trade, Anna Serner, CEO Swedish Film Institute, Anna Gissler, CEO Stockholm Business Region, Gabriella Augustsson, Public Affairs and Press Counselor at Embassy of Sweden Washington DC and Jonas Hafström, Swedish ambassador, at the Embassy of Sweden Washington DC.

Also attending were representatives from big gaming studios Avalanche, DICE, and Ubisoft Massive.  And a LOT of L.A. party people...

Isabel Adrian "Swedish Housewife" at Swedish Affair
"With this two-day event we want to deepen the love affair between creative Sweden and Los Angeles with smart people getting together, sharing knowledge and thoughts," says a representative of the Swedish Affair.  All in all a fun party atmosphere "made by creative Sweden to share and learn with like-minded in fashion, games, film and TV, and cool media tech and innovative new media and creative business. Transmedia crowd, creative industries people, techies, movers and shakers, nerds and celebrities will all be present while celebrating creativity and innovation, sharing experiences and building new relations. May it be a business affair, a creative partnership affair or a real love affair!"

The party began and then ended in the shuttle picked up at the Andaz Hotel on the Sunset Strip, which became a sort of party bus on its own during the trip going up and down those "high rolling" streets in those Hollywood Hills...

Drew Goddard to Receive Special
Filmmakers Showcase Award at the
38th Annual Saturn Awards

Cabin in the Woods Director Joins Frank Oz, Robert Kirkman,
James Remar and The Simpsons in Special Honors

LOS ANGELES – June 19, 2012 – Filmmaker Drew Goddard will receive the Filmmakers Showcase Award at the 38th Annual Saturn Awards on July 26, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films announced today.

Goddard will receive this special recognition for his directorial debut The Cabin in the Woods, a dizzying blend of horror, science fiction and fantasy that he also co-wrote and which was released by Lionsgate in April.
Past recipients of the Filmmakers Showcase Award include Matt Reeves (Let Me In), Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Bill Paxton (Frailty) and Eli Roth (Hostel).

“Drew is one of the strongest voices in genre entertainment,” said Robert Holguin, president of the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. “With his directorial debut, he showed strong leadership in bringing his original vision to the screen. The Cabin in the Woods is one of the most original films this year and earned critical acclaim and great audience response for its ingenious rethinking of the horror film.”

In addition to directing The Cabin in the Woods, Goddard is known for his writing work on the TV series Alias, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lost, and also wrote the 2008 hit Cloverfield.  He is currently writing the upcoming Steven Spielberg film Robopocalypse for DreamWorks.

Goddard, Oz, Kirkman, Remar and producers of The Simpson will receive their awards during the 38th annual Saturn Awards presentation on Thursday, July 26, in Burbank.  The Saturn Awards are produced by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and honors the best in genre entertainment.
The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films was founded in 1972 by noted film historian Dr. Donald A. Reed to honor and recognize films often overlooked by mainstream awards.  Over the years, the Academy has expanded its reach to include recognizing excellence in television and home entertainment, as well as other genres, including adventure, thriller and action.
